Happy Memorial Day

Do you have any special plans for Memorial Day weekend? I always look forward to my family’s Memorial Day cookout. RABOM has a few crafts that can get you ready for the holiday weekend:

Patriotic Windsock

Picnic Party Series

Patriotic Wreath by It’s A Muegge Life

I will leave you with a recipe for a Patriotic Refrigerator Cake. This would be a great dessert to take to a Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day get together. You can definitely change up the flavors and make this cake for any occasion. I was inspired by the Strawberry Refrigerator Cake found on Crystal & Co.. I changed up a few things to make it fit the patriotic theme, and it tastes delicious. I always love a really easy recipe that you can adapt to your needs.

Ingredients:

Box of White Cake mix(plus add-ins listed on the back of the box)

1 tsp almond extract(optional)

1 tub(15 oz) of strawberries in syrup

1 small box of vanilla instant pudding

1 cup of cold milk

1 tub of Cool Whip

Blueberries

1. Bake the white cake according to the directions on the box. I added 1 tsp of almond extract to the batter because I LOVE almond cakes, but you may leave out the extract. You could also amp up the flavor by adding citrus juice and zest(a lemon and strawberry cake would be amazing ).

2. Let the cake completely cool before you move on the the next step.

3. Poke holes in the cooled cake with the end of a wooden spatula or spoon.

4. Puree the strawberries and syrup in a food processor or blender.

Tip: Make sure your strawberries have COMPLETELY thawed before blending them. Mine were still a little frozen and I ended up with a smoothie consistency instead of strawberry chunks in a syrup. The cake was still delicious, but the consistency of the “puree” made it not absorb as well resulting in the Cool Whip layer not spreading over the strawberry soaked cake like it should. That’s what I get for being impatient. You live, you learn.

5. Spread the strawberry puree over the cake and allow time for it to soak into the cake. As you can see, the strawberry mixture didn’t soak in quite as well as it should since it was still a little frozen. Your cake will do much better than mine and won’t have as much puree sitting on top of the cake.

6. Whisk 1 cup of cold milk with the vanilla pudding mix. Fold in the Cool Whip until well combined. Spread the Cool Whip mixture over the cake. You may definitely omit the pudding and just use Cool Whip if you would like(I love all of the options you have in this recipe!).

7. Since this is a patriotic cake, I put blueberries on top of the cake to add the “blue” element. Not a fan of blueberries? You could definitely use blue sprinkles.

I hope you enjoy making this cake for your next cookout! Have fun experimenting with different flavors to substitute in this recipe. I think I want to try lemon and blueberry next time:)

Happy Memorial Day to you and your family!

Elizabeth

Bottle Cap Art

I have a fun project to show you today. Bottle cap art is great for both kids and adults, and the design options are endless. Let’s get started!

Supplies:

Bottle caps

Cardstock or construction paper

Frame

Canvas

Craft or hot glue

Directions:

1. Grab your paper/canvas and bottle caps. Lay out your design on your background. I decided to make bottle cap flowers. Glue your design onto the canvas or paper.

2. If using a piece of paper, place your design into a frame to add some stability since the bottle caps are heavy.

3. The design possibilities are endless! Here are a few ideas:

Paint the canvas and add your bottle cap design to add a 3D effect. Example- paint a garden scene with stems and leaves and have the bottle caps be the flowers.

Rainbow

Bumble bee

Random geometric design

Letter for recepient

You could also put magnets on your bottle caps and have bottle cap art on your fridge. This is a great project for kids to experiment with different shapes, designs, and colors. Thanks for stopping by, and have fun making your bottle cap art!

Fairy Skirt

Are you ready to complete your fairy outfit? We have already made our fairy crowns, so let’s get started on our skirt.

Supplies:

Tulle

3/8″ ribbon

Crochet headband, fold over elastic, or elastic

Directions:

1. Grab your tulle and scissors. Determine how long you would like for the skirt to be and double that number to get your tulle strip length. I wanted my skirt to be 18″ long, so my tulle strips were 1 yard(or 36″) long. Cut your tulle into strips. The amount of strips you cut will determine the “fluffiness” of your skirt. You will probably need at least 30 strips of tulle.

2. I will be using a crochet headband for my skirt waistband, but you may use fold over elastic or “regular” elastic if a crochet headband is too small for your fairy’s waist. I will be using the same steps as our No Sew Tutu to make my fairy skirt(click on the link to view our instructional video). Fold one strip of tulle in half and thread the loop through the crochet headband.

3. Pull the tails through the loop to create a knot.

4. Continue this process until the waistband is covered in tulle. I only did one row of tulle on the crochet headband, but feel free to do multiple rows for a fuller skirt.

5. You could be finished at this point, but I wanted to add a little more pizazz to my fairy skirt. I cut six 1 yard pieces of purple ribbon(I used Purple and Lavender RABOM Iridescence) and tied it in different spots around the skirt.

Your fairy skirt is complete, so all that’s left is a pretty wand to help spread magic and cheer to all. There are a couple different styles of wands that you can make. Check out these tutorials for some inspiration:

Check out our Wedding Wand tutorial for a fun, flowy wand…

Or you can add a tulle puff to the top like our Ballerina Wand.

What a great addition to the dress-up box, right? Now your fairy is ready to go enchant the world with her new outfit

Do you have tons of scrap ribbon that you just couldn’t bare to throw away? Does it live in a pile that makes it impossible to find anything?

I have the perfect solution for you! POPSICLE STICKS!

Roll all of those ribbon scraps around popsicle sticks to keep them organized and easy to see. You can roll one or two ribbons on the stick depending on the length and width of the scrap.

Put all of your newly organized “ribbon sticks” into a jar or bucket and keep it on your craft table for easy access.

Wouldn’t you love to have a craft table where everything has it’s own special spot? Well head over to The Crafty Blog Stalker to find out how Katie made her DIY Craft Table. This table is a crafter’s dream! You have storage space for all(or most) of your supplies, AND it doesn’t take up a ridiculous amount of space. This would also make a great desk in a home office, or you could change up the construction a little bit to make it an island in your kitchen. So many possibilities! Have fun organizing

Ribbon Spool Hanger

Do you need a way to organize all of your spools of ribbon? I’ve seen many different creative ways to store ribbon, but today I will show you how to use a pants clothes hanger to organize your ribbon.

Supplies:

A tiered pants clothes hanger

A beautiful collection of ribbon

Directions:

1. This is sooo simple. Go out and buy a pants clothes hanger if you don’t already have one. Make sure to measure it to ensure that the spools will fit on the bars.

2. Slide your ribbon onto the bars and you have created your very own ribbon storage! Adhere a hook to your wall and you are ready to go(I used a tack for the picture).

Here are a few other examples of ways to store your ribbon:

Paper towel stand

Planter box

Rain gutter

Tension rod

Straw dispenser

Have fun organizing all of your ribbon…I bet you will find some “lost treasures” in your collection.

Twine Organizer

Do you have craft supplies scattered all over your house? Do you find yourself frustrated that you can’t find what you need for a project, but then it miraculously appears three weeks later? Well you aren’t alone. Over the next two weeks, RABOM will be doing a series on craft organization. We will feature great organization tips and projects from other bloggers along with a few of our own. So buckle up and get ready to turn your craft space into a crafter’s heaven!

Today we are featuring Amber’s Baker’s Twine Organizer. This is a simple project to make, and I think it would be a great way to organize and display tulle or ribbon as well. The tutorial for this frame along with other organizational tips can be found on Amber’s blog, Damask Love.

Check back later this week for more craft storage solutions!
